In 2016, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) approved a project entitled Mainstreaming Biodiversity into the Management of the Coastal Zone in the Republic of Mauritius, with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the Executing Agency. The Project is funded with a grant of USD 4.66 million from GEF, and co-financing contributions (largely in-kind) of USD 15.31 million, for total funding of USD 19.97 million. The Project is being implemented over a period of five years, from 2017 to 2021. The overall purpose of the Project is to address the urgent need for more effective management of resources in the coastal zone of Mauritius, with specific emphasis on preservation of biodiversity and reversal of land degradation. The implementing partner is the Ministry of Ocean Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping in collaboration with Rodrigues Regional Assembly and national entities in charge of environment, tourism, agriculture and physical development.
