The objective of the Agriculture Sector Modernization Project is to increase agriculture productivity, improve market access, enhance value addition of smallholder farmers and agribusiness in the project areas. Ministry of Agriculture implements the Component 2 that focuses on productivity enhancement, diversification and demonstration to support smallholder farmers to produce competitive and marketable commodities, improve their ability to respond to market requirements and move towards an increase in commercialization.
Seven districts in Northern, North Central, Eastern, Central and Uva Provinces have been selected to implement the Modern Agriculture Technology Demonstration Parks (ATDPs) under the Project. The ATDPs will support farmers to develop professional producer associations, achieve economies of scale in production and exports, improve marketing and value addition and achieve greater efficiency in the provision of technical and support servises. Farmers are expected to directly benefit through improved production capacity and input supply/management, technologies for post-harvest, improved market linkages as well as opportunities for value addition.
Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) are established at each cluster and training provided to enhance the FPO members capacity in production technologies, post-harvest management and business management. The FPOs are linked to domestic and international export markets with long-term buyer agreements established with agribusiness partners.
