The Objective of this project is sustained high growth in irrigated agriculture through efficient and sustainable management of large scale irrigation schemes, which will enable high yields and higher cropping intensification and include crop diversification into high value crops.
Enhancing water productivity is a key priority for the Government of Bangladesh. In an effort to find new and innovative approaches to agricultural irrigation, a trial of a privatized and modernized irrigation systems in the Muhuri region has been agreed.
ANZDEC has been contracted as the interim Muhuri Irrigation Management Operator and will support the Bangladesh Water Development Board in the development of new and improved irrigation management practices and systems. Changes will be focused on realising the production potential of large scale irrigation schemes through performance-based irrigated agriculture and the development of efficient self-funding irrigation systems. At the end of the five-year project period, the independent and self-funding systems will be handed over to a third party operator.
